Google recently announced that from April 21st this year, it will be making some changes to the way its search algorithms rank mobile search results. The two main ways in which it will do this are:

  • It will rank mobile-friendly factors as part of its mobile search results
  • It will improve the rankings for mobile apps which use App Indexing for signed-in users

So, what does this mean for you?

Well, from April 21st, Google will not only label your website mobile-friendly (responsive), if it is! Google will also use this mobile-friendliness to determine whether your site should, therefore, rank higher in search results. This improvement is building on the changes they made to the mobile ranking demotion in June 2013 and is positioned so “users will find it easier to get relevant, high-quality search results that are optimised for their devices”. Google themselves feel that this change will have a significant impact on the mobile search results – more so even than the recent Penguin or Panda algorithm changes.

Recent statistics released by Google revealed that they believe that this mobile-friendly algorithm change will impact about 40% of mobile search queries, compared to about 12% of English queries which were affected by the Panda change, and only 4% of global queries across desktop and mobile affected by the Panda algorithm change. There is also a widespread belief that about 50% of searches performed on Google are completed on mobile devices. All this adds up to the fact that if your site is not mobile-friendly, you need to start working towards making it more mobile-friendly now.
